The deanery, he suggested, is essentially <b><i>&#8220;flexible&#8221;<\/i><\/b>. The problem is when it lacks clarity of purpose and is merely <b><i>&#8220;floppy\u201d<\/i><\/b>.<\/p>\n<p>Bishop Alistair identified three ways in which a deanery&#8217;s shape might be visualised:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>A tool of compliance<\/li>\n<li>An agent of management<\/li>\n<li>A Forum for inter-active leadership<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b style=\"line-height: 1.5em;\">Bishop Peter Maurice, <\/b><span style=\"line-height: 1.5em;\">Bishop of Taunton, provided the second main input to the conference, highlighting how deaneries are contributing to a more flexible approach to mission in the diocese of Bath and Wells.<\/span><b>&#8230; For a Flexible Mission<\/b><\/p>\n<p>Nearly ten years ago, the diocese launched its strategy for ministry and mission under the banner: <b><i>&#8216;Changing Lives, Changing Churches for Changing Communities.&#8217;<\/i><\/b> The deaneries were a key part of that strategy.<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"2012 Conference Resources\" href=\"http:\/\/www.nationaldeaneries.net\/?page_id=1758\">Summary Report, Study Notes and Conference resources<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The 13th National Conference on the Deanery took place at the Hayes Conference Centre from 5 &#8211; 7 October 2012.
